Update 2 January 2024

On 25 November 2023, the Official Gazette by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization published the amendments of sea pollution fines showing an increase in the fines for 2024.

Our local correspondents, Omur Marine, have accordingly kindly provided us with the attached circular advising the new rates applicable from 1 January 2024.

Our local correspondent recommends all members to take immediate contact with them to avoid delay and complications in connection with an alleged pollution incident. They can also assist on practical information of acceptable security and recommended loss prevention measures.

Update 2 May 2023

In addition to the pollution fine tariff published in January 2023 a new regulation has been added to the Environment Code, where one significant amendment is the introduction of a gross tonnage limitation for calculating administrative fines. According to the new rule, an upper limit will apply meaning that tankers, vessels and other marine vehicles larger that GT 100.000 will be subject to same rates as those with a GT of 100.000.

Update 5 January 2023

Pursuant to the Turkish Environmental Code, the new pollution fine tariff effective as of 1 January 2023 has been declared in the Official Gazette by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.
